Guyssss I got my first editorial commission in 10 years!
Funnily enough I started my career doing editorial illustrations for a few blogs and magazines whilst I was at university, then live event work and things took over the focus and I haven’t really touched it since.
But it’s something I’ve always wanted to get back to because it’s fun to create images that tell a story and sum up an article, so last year I took an editorial course to dip my frosty little toe back into the editorial pond.
Then couple weeks after the course finishes I get approached to create an editorial illustration, manifestation, I’m telling youuuu!
This illustration was for an article written by Clare Considine about asylum seekers falling in love in the UK whilst awaiting a decision on their asylum.
Whilst reading the interviews featured in the article, it just seemed like these people were living a life where the rug could be pulled out from underneath them at any moment.
Which made me think of a Jenga tower, trying to go on a date and live a life whilst balancing on the Jenga tower and the judge is the one pulling the blocks out so it could topple over at any moment.
Thank you Stack Magazines for commissioning me for your The Mortar newsletter.
